Pascha Resurrection Icon - 20th c. English inscription. This is a depiction of the harrowing of Hades by Jesus during His three day burial. Adam and Eve are being pulled from their graves as the kings and prophets are led forth out of the darkness of death into life. The gates of Hades are collapsed in the form of a cross similar to that found in icons of Christ's baptism. As the serpent is often placated into submission in the theophany icon, death is shown conquered and bound beneath the gates - allowing open passage through Hades into the resurrection. This icon print is mounted on stable medium density fiber core plywood with a birch wood veneer.
