Music of Greece - MMoA Series [CD]
Located between Europe and Asia, Greece finds itself amidst a variety of cultural currents, which has resulted in a uniquely diverse musical identity. Since ancient times, the Greeks treated music as an integral part of their daily lives. It was one of the fundamental elements of Greek tragedy and was regarded as an indispensable part of education.
There exists no record of what ancient Greek music sounded like, but musicological research has unearthed valuable evidence linking ancient Greek music to the modern Greek folk song.
This diverse compilation features early music by The Metropolitan Museum of Art performers Cappella Romana, Greek folk songs, rebetiko music (known as the Greek blues), and contemporary Greek compositions from the award-winning films Zorba the Greek by Theodorakis and Never on Sunday by Hadjidakis.
