The Baltic Sea, almost entirely enclosed, borders and receives pollution from nine countries that have widely different natural resources, economies, social structures and mores. The end of the Cold War has allowed the regeneration of political, economic, social, cultural and religious ties within the region. The symposium called attention to the problems facing the Sea, including river-borne pollution, the danger of spillage from maritime accidents, and the collapse of some fish stocks through overfishing. It also continued the dialogue between religious and scientific viewpoints and debated the theological suggestion that Man's relation to Nature might be closer to that of a priest than of a steward.
