The voice of John Zizioulas may turn out to be the fresh voice for which theology and especially ecclesiology have long been waiting. In the context of a complete theology, which includes extended consideration of the major theological topics - the Trinity, Christology, eschatology, ministry, and sacrament, but above all, the Eucharist - the author propounds a fresh understanding, based on the early Fathers and the Orthodox tradition, of the concept of person, and so of the Church itself.

His consideration of the local church as "catholic" in the literal sense, and the need to understand the universal Church, not as a superstructure but as the communion of all Churches, provides the program for the ecclesiology of the future.

Yves Congar has written that he considers the author to be "one of the most original and profound theologians of our epoch" and that he "presents a penetrating and coherent reading of the tradition of the Greek Fathers."

John Zizioulas is Metropolitan of Pergamon, in the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

Being as Communion is part of the CONTEMPORARY GREEK THEOLOGIANS SERIES.

The process of globalization evokes either euphoria or alarm: Some view globalization as an unmistakable sign of progress, while others view it as an unquestionable threat. Nevertheless, the accelerated development of economic, scientific, political, and social links among all the peoples of the world have turned out planet into a megalopolis replete with slums. In this work Archbishop Anastasios presents his conviction that the ecumenical vision of the Orthodox Church is the " response" to the emergent global conditions.

In the Orthodox tradition everything is understood in a universal context, from the creation of the world to the vision of the new heaven and new earth. The human enterprise as a whole and the salvation of the entire world remain the basic themes of Holy Scripture. In this work, Archbishop Anastasios discusses the Orthodox perspective on human rights, the dialogue with Islam, and the relationship between culture and the gospel and provides an understanding of world religions. His words invite us to broaden our field of vision and encompass the whole earth.

His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios is Emeritus Professor of the History of Religions of the National University of Athens, where he taught for twenty years, including serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Theology. He has published eight books and more than 150 articles, most of which have been translated into numerous languages. He has lectured internationally on inter-religious dialogue, modern Christian global witness, economic justice, and peacemaking. He has served in various ministries of the Church, including General Director of the Apostoliki Diakonia of the Church of Greece and acting Archbishop of East Africa. As Archbishop of Tirana and all Albania, he rebuilt a church decimated by twenty-four years of persecution. He is highly respected for his pioneering efforts in reawakening the missionary consciousness of the Orthodox Church today.

This splendid translation of Elisabeth Behr-Sigel's essays on issues related to the ministry of women in the church is a cause of joy and gratitude for English-speaking people interested in orthodox Christianity. If the present volume did nothing more than to widen and deepen discussion among the Orthodox concerning the community and ministry of women and men in the church, this alone would be sufficient reason to offer its author, and its English translators and publisher, our greatest gratitude.

Vladimir Lossky established himself as one of the most brilliant of Orthodox scholars in the years between his departure from Russia and his death in 1958. His uncompromising faithfulness to Scriptural and patristic tradition, coupled with his constant concern for an articulate Orthodox witness in the West, makes his works indispensable for an understanding of the theology of the Eastern Church today.
